Candidate for Clay County Attorney and former district court judge Amber Gustafson says Clay County has too many unsuccesful cases that go to trial. She says Clay County is not keeping up with neighboring counties, despite having more serious cases.
“Compared to Becker and Ottertail [County] they were dismissing, and this is excluding traffic.” Said Gustafson. “We’re not talking about traffic cases, we’re talking about adult criminal filings where the whole case is dismissed, they are only dismissing 17-18%. It’s double here in Clay [County] and to me it’s inefficient.”
She says a change of leadership could be beneficial for the office.
“20 years with one leadership it’s time to have some fresh eyes and a new perspective to say what are we doing here, why and how can we be better ministers of justice?”
If elected, Gustafson says she wants to better train prosecutors so the office can be on the same page of what’s being charged, why, and what information is being taken to trial.
She made her comments on KFGO’S Afternoons Live, with guest host Dane Dekrey.
