FARGO (KFGO) – An attorney who represents the family of Savanna Greywind says the family was shocked when they learned that the North Dakota Supreme Court overturned the life sentence of William Hoehn.
Hoehn pleaded guilty to kidnapping conspiracy in a 2017 attack on Greywind, who died of her injuries when her baby was cut from her body by Hoehn’s girlfriend, Brooke Crews.
Attorney Gloria Allred tells KFGO News that Greywind’s mother, Norberta, is concerned about what the ruling means for the safety of her granddaughter, Haisley Jo.
“It will increase her concerns about the potential danger to Haisley Jo if Mr. Hoehn is ever allowed to be free” Allred said. “Norberta hopes that at the new sentencing hearing that the Court will sentence Mr. Hoehn to the maximum sentence possible under the law.”
Hoehn had faced up to 21 years, but a judge granted prosecutors’ request to label Hoehn a dangerous offender, enhancing his sentence to life with the possibility of parole. The Supreme Court ruled that Hoehn should not have received the designation and ordered that he receive a new sentence.
Allred says the family is “disappointed and upset,” but they also realize that the Supreme Court’s actions are not within their control.
“If Mr. Hoehn is released on parole at some point, will they be able to protect Hasiley Jo? Does he have any interest in Haisley Jo? They are just very worried as any grandparents would be.”
