FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – A three-alarm fire heavily damaged an apartment building at 137 Prairewood Drive South in Fargo.
The fire was reported shortly before 5 a.m, Thursday. It started on the balcony of a top floor apartment. Eyewitnesses say decking was burning and the flames quickly spread to the attic and burned through the roof. Flames and smoke could be seen from some distance away.
A resident told KFGO News a person living in the apartment where the fire started grabbed an extinguisher from the hallway and tried to put out the fire but the fire spread rapidly and when alarms went off, people evacuated.
Firefighters remained on scene for hours after the fire was put out to make sure there were no flare-ups.
Fire Marshal Ryan Erickson says there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting residents displaced from the 18 unit building.
