ST. PAUL, Minn. – Legislation that would help 59,000 Minnesotans attend college for free is advancing in the Minnesota Senate.
The Senate Higher Education Committee passed the bill this week which would offer grants to Minnesota resident students with a family income under $120,000.
“The tuition-free college program would help close opportunity gaps and racial disparities and would take a step toward solving the enrollment and budgeting crisis we are seeing at colleges and universities across the state,” Sen. Omar Fateh (D-Minneapolis) said.
Senate Republicans expressed concerns about the annual cost of the program.
