ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KFGO/WCCO) – Faced with over $18 million in projected deficits, St. Cloud State is phasing out six majors, along with 37 faculty and staff members.
In announcing the cuts this week, President Robbyn Wacker said they’ll allow the school to concentrate more on the areas of study that are more popular on campus.
Undergraduate majors that are disappearing include philosophy, theatre, real estate, insurance and nuclear medicine technology. One graduate level course, marriage and family therapy, is also being phased out.
The school said those students enrolled in those programs will be able to finish them out and graduate.
The University announced a theme in 2019 called “It’s Time” which would focus on redefining what St. Cloud State would be.
“It’s time to recognize, celebrate and build upon St. Cloud State University’s institutional innovation, forward-thinking research, innovations in teaching, and overall academic excellence as we identify new ways to serve the students of today and the future,” said Wacker President, St. Cloud State University.
Tuition prices have increased, and admissions have been trending down the last several years. SCSU says that in a more competitive environment for students, they are focusing more on ways students can connect their education to careers once they graduate.
Enrollment at St. Cloud State has dropped from more than 18,000 in 2010 to about 10,000 last fall.
