MINNEAPOLIS – The Minneapolis Police Department is honoring an officer who was shot in the line of duty earlier this month.
Police Chief Brian O’Hara awarded Officer Jacob Spies the department’s Medal of Honor and the first-ever Departmental Purple Heart during a ceremony Thursday.
Officer Spies was struck in the shoulder after 14 rounds were fired at him by suspects from a vehicle believed to be involved in an armed robbery.
Fellow officers transported Spies to the hospital in a squad car and he was released early the next morning.
Four suspects were later arrested and two have been charged in the shooting.
