Sharing aspects of one’s personal aspirations can always be a little bit intimidating. After all, if it doesn’t pan out …everyone knows you failed. However, it’s sort of necessary when you have to crank out a blog on a regular basis. You start to run out of things to talk about so I’m going to just put this out there; I LOVE CARTOONS! Always have and always will. In fact, I’d like to make cartoons one day…. y’know, for a living. I have drawn comics for as long as I can remember. I’ve also made a ridiculous number of comedy audio tapes with my friends. Therefore, going into radio was a natural transition. Suddenly, making goofy little skits with my friends was something that I would do every morning on the radio. It would seem to me that cartoons are the logical next step. It’s a little bit of each.
I’ve been making this comic strip called “Sinkhole” for well over five years. Just for the hell of it, I decided to experiment with stick puppets and backgrounds to see what I could come up with. I’ve sort of created my own little “cheap-ass make-shift animation studio” in my basement at home.
I’ve done three issues of the Sinkhole comic book so there’s plenty of material to draw from. With the help of my friends Britta and JJ doing extra voices, I create an audio version of one of the strips, then draw backgrounds and characters. I cut them out, put ’em on sticks, and move ’em around while I film them. Easy peezy. I’ve done six of them so far and for now, this is just a cheapie way to see what my comic might look like as an animated show. Hopefully, the cheap DIY-aesthetic adds something positive to the final product. Either way, I’m having a hell of a lot of fun making them. -Scotch
