ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO/Learfield) – The Senate is taking up a comprehensive gun violence prevention package today. Before session, DFL Senator Ron Latz said this vote is important because voters will know where their lawmakers stand on banning assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
“That’s fair information for the people to know. I can’t imagine frankly any more important vote that we’re going to be taking this legislative session because quite literally lives are on the line with these decisions here today.” Latz said.
The package includes a number of provisions including increased mental health services, school safety funding and other gun safety measures.
“Should we pass gun regulations, enhance mental health, or school safety. The answer is yes. This legislation is comprehensive and doesn’t compromise on our values. Students and parents do not want us to choose between banning weapons of war and investing in schools. This isn’t either or. We need both.” The author of the package, Senator Zaynab Mohamed of Minneapolis said.
If the bill passes today, it faces a bigger fight in the house where republicans have blocked anti-gun legislation.
