MOORHEAD (KFGO) — U.S. Congresswoman Angie Craig made a stop on the campaign trail in Moorhead Sunday afternoon to meet with local leaders about the cost of living for Moorhead residents.
The roundtable consisted of leaders from healthcare providers and organizations that help those in need, like ‘A Place for Hope’, a recovery center and food shelf, where the discussion was held.
“Healthcare cost, housing cost, childcare cost, the cost of groceries are really driving challenges within all of our communities right now and so hearing about the challenge in Moorhead, but also talking about what are some of the ways that a good federal partner could make things better here,” Craig said.
Darrell Vasvick is the executive director for ‘A Place for Hope’ says that cuts to programs like SNAP have jammed up the waitlist for food assistance.
“We’re open Tuesday through Friday, from 10 to 3:30, we see ten to 15 new families every day, and we require appointments to come in and we’re right now at about five weeks. So if they come in today, their next appointment is about five weeks out.” Vasvick said.
Leaders from Essentia and Sanford Health were also at the roundtable. They discussed needs to lower costs of healthcare premiums and address staffing shortages, not just for nurses but also for jobs like radiologists.
“What I heard from them is bringing all of the stakeholders together, from big pharma to hospitals themselves to pharmacy benefit providers, and really having some tough conversations about not just their piece of the healthcare system, but how do we actually drive down the cost of healthcare? Not just how do we cover people with health insurance, how do we drive down cost?” Craig said.
Craig is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Tina Smith. Craig says she’s the right candidate for greater Minnesota.
“For greater Minnesota, for rural communities, as the head of the Ag committee, I’m the candidate with the experience to really focus not only on our urban and suburban areas, but also communities across Minnesota,” Craig said.
Craig faces Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan in the August 11th primary election.
