MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead Police say the parents of a student who brought what turned out to be THC products to a middle school are jailed on felony drug charges.
Martin, 40, and Amanda, 43, Hulst of Moorhead were identified as suspects after a dozen students at Horizon Middle School became sick Monday after eating what they thought was candy. The students complained of nausea after eating the THC, but were uncooperative during the investigation.
Moorhead Area Public Schools Superintendent Brandon Lunak says that keeping drugs out of schools begins at home.
“Together the two of us can’t do this alone. We can continue to get and stand behind this microphone here, but at some point we also need to realize that there’s some practices that have to happen at home.” Lunak said.
It’s the second drug related incident at Horizon Middle School this school year. In December, a student was arrested for bringing 1,500 fentanyl pills to school. Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick says it’s getting more difficult to keep drugs out.

“People are questioning, ‘hey you know what, why doesn’t the school search backpacks for these substances?’ That search should be happening at home. You know I do that with my own kids sometimes, just take a look in their backpacks, see what they got in there, make sure they’re doing their homework all those things, but every parent should be doing the same thing and not put that on the school.” Helmick said “This isn’t necessarily a question about drug legality, but when you look at the fentanyl case that we discussed, as well as other things that were recovered in this house, yeah it’s a problem, not just for Moorhead but for community in general.”
Police say officers searched a home in the 1100 block of 10 1/2 Street N. in Moorhead where they found illegal amounts of THC products along with psychedelic mushrooms and large amounts of cash.
The Hulst’s were arrested Wednesday morning. The children living in the house were referred to Clay County Social Services.
