(KNFL/KFGO) – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks provided a much-needed response to their Game 1 loss, with a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Monarchs. With this victory, Fargo-Moorhead will head to Legends Field in Kansas City for Games 3, 4, and a potential 5 as they tied up the Miles Wolff Cup West Division Championship Series at 1-1. The Redhawks’ Edinson Batista would start on the mound, facing off against the Monarchs’ starting pitcher, Sawyer Allen.
Following a scoreless first frame, Kansas City would pile on the runs in the top of the 2nd, as J.D. Davis hit an RBI double to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Jumping back to the top of the batting order, Tyler Gentry dropped in an RBI single to raise the score line to 3-0.
RedHawks 3B Brian Fuentes would open the scoring for the home team in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring an RBI single of his own to reduce the deficit to only 2 runs, with a score of 3-1.
J.D. Davis continued his hot streak into the 3rd with an RBI single for the Monarchs, bringing his RBI total to 3 on the evening, and extending Kansas City’s lead to a comfortable 4-1.
Up 2-1 in the at-bat in the bottom of the 5th inning, Jose Sermo did what he does best, which is sending baseballs out of Newman Outdoor Field. Sermo launched a 465-foot 2-run home run way over the right field wall. This energizing play would give the RedHawks momentum going into the 6th, while still trailing 4-3.
Fargo-Moorhead wouldn’t be trailing for long, as Eric Filia would bat in the tying run with a line drive into left field, as the RedHawks would claw all the way back from down 4-1, to a 4-4 score line heading into the 7th inning.
With Fargo-Moorhead’s Tripp Clark reaching base on a 2-out triple, Fuentes would step up to the plate with the go-ahead run just 90 feet away. down 0-1 in the count, Fuentes blooped a single into center field, which advanced Clark to complete the RedHawks comeback, 5-4.
A clutch double play in the top of the 9th would provide reliever Tyler Jeans an opportunity to finish the game with a final 3rd strike against Kansas City’s Grant Richardson. Richardson stuck out looking, sending this series back to Kansas City, tied 1-1.
RedHawks starter Edinson Batista would go only 2.0 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 1. Reliever Bryce Brassfield would earn a well deserved win, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out 4 batters. Tyler Jeans would mark down his 3rd save of this postseason
Monarchs starter Sawyer Allen would pitch 4.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 7 hits, while walking 2. Relief Pitcher Ryan Anderson would suffer the loss.
